Ecology of Aphidophaga

International symposia on the research into behaviour and ecology of aphidophagous insects

This series of symposia has traditionally been seen as a unique scientific forum for discussions on ecological and behavioural interactions within this guild.  Its focus is to understand how the spontaneous “natural control” works, with the aim to improve it.  After an initial couple of  meetings in the Czech Republic, symposia were organised in Poland, Hungary, France, Belgium, Canada/Quebec, Portugal/Azores, Czech Republic, Greece and Italy.

There will be a symposium on “Harmonia axyridis: time for a global collaboration” at the International Congress of Biological Invasions (ICBI) in Qingdao, China, 23 to 27 October 2013.

The IOBC/WPRS Working Group 'Benefits and risks of exotic biological control agents' organized the second symposium on Harmonia axyridis and other invasive ladybirds in Hluboká nad Vltavou, Czech Republic, on October 30 to November 3, 2011.

Two additional meetings were related in their topic to Ecology of Aphidophaga but were not enumerated in the Symposia series:

(1) The symposium “Biological Control of Aphids and Coccids” was organised at the Faculty of Agriculture, Yamagata University in Tsuruoka, Yamagata, Japan, by Professor Hironori Yasuda and his team, September 25-29, 2005. Proceedings of the Symposium were printed by the Yamagata University (234 pp., no ISSN, no publ.date) and some papers presented at this meeting were published in the journal Population Ecology.

(2) An international conference on Harmonia axyridis and other invasive ladybirds was held in Engelberg, Switzerland on September 6-10, 2009. This was the first meeting of IOBC/WPRS Working Group 'Benefits and risks of exotic biological control agents'. Proceedings were edited by Dirk Babendreier, Alexandre Aebi, Marc Kenis & Helen Roy and were published as IOBC/WPRS Bulletin, Vol. 58, 2010.

A special issue of BioControl was published in 2008, vol 53 (1), 287 pp. “From Biological Control to Invasion: the Ladybird Harmonia axyridis as a Model Species” HE Roy & E Wajnberg (Eds) (ISSN 1386-6141).
